Retail, Food & Retail Regulatory round-up w/e 10 February. Consumer organisation Which has published a detailed report on ‘Creating a successful enforcement system for UK consumers’.

Important Updates 

Which call for strengthening of UK enforcement system: Consumer organisation Which has published a detailed report on ‘Creating a successful enforcement system for UK consumers’.  The report highlighting weaknesses of current Local Authority based Trading Standards services calls for the Competition and Markets Authority to become a Consumer and Competition Authority, for an independent product safety body to protect the safety of consumers and for the Food Standards Agency National Crime Unit to be given investigatory powers. The report also calls for the display of Food Hygiene ratings to be made mandatory in England and Scotland.

Advertising rulings on failure to show price reduction claims are genuine: The Advertising Standards Authority has upheld a complaint against ‘Alison at Home’ for failure to demonstrate that products were generally being sold in the market place at their advertised recommended retail price.  A complaint has been upheld against DSG retail for failure to demonstrate the normal price to substantiate a 10% of marked price claim.

CMA secures undertakings from hotel booking web sites: The Competition and Markets Authority has welcomed commitments from travel booking sites on greater transparency for consumers.
