Retail, Food & Hospitality Brexit Update W/E 23rd August

25 August 2020
Retail, Food & Hospitality Brexit Update W/E 23rd August. 7th round of UK- EU future partnership negotiations.

Brexit Developments

7th round of UK- EU future partnership negotiations: It appears that the latest round of negotiations again failed to bridge the gap of EU expectations regarding a level playing field and governance arrangements for a future partnership. The UK Chief Negotiator David Frost states “The EU is still insisting not only that we must accept continuity with EU state aid and fisheries policy, but also that this must be agreed before any further substantive work can be done in any other area of the negotiation, including on legal texts".
EU Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier concludes that "The need for a level playing field is not going to go away, even if the UK continues to insist on a low-quality agreement on goods and services only. It is a non-negotiable pre-condition to grant access to our market of 450 million citizens, given the UK's geographic proximity and the intensity of our economic exchanges".

It does appear from UK and EU negotiator perspectives that progress was at least made on more technical issues. The next round of negotiations are due to take place in London in w/c 7 September. View > View > View >
