Hadrian's Wall Walk – Reconnecting with Colleagues

28 June 2022

Sheryl Dempster, a trainee solicitor in the DWF Glasgow office joined a group of colleagues to walk Hadrain's Wall to raise funds for the DWF Foundation. She has shared with us her experience of walking the wall from a social/wellbeing perspective and encourages us all to get out and do something for the community with our colleagues!

At the beginning of May this year, I had the opportunity to participate in a walk along Hadrian's Wall with a number of colleagues from across the business. We participated in this walk in order to raise money for the DWF Foundation, which supports so many great causes. It was also an excellent opportunity to meet up with colleagues outside of work, and to meet and interact with colleagues from other offices.

This event involved a three-day walk along Hadrian's Wall. I went along on the Saturday, with a handful of my Scottish colleagues, to join the walk for the day. It was a very early start for a Saturday as we all had a long drive to reach Hadrian's Wall and our meeting time was 9am. However, the early rise was definitely worth it. We walked from Steels Rigg to Greencarts campsite (10 miles) and took in some lovely views. The guides were also filling us in on some of the history of the wall along the way. Personally, I had never been to Hadrian's Wall before, so it was great getting to see a new part of the country and to find out about some of the history.

The walk lasted for most of the day so we had plenty of time to chat and catch up. It was a unique opportunity as we were able to meet colleagues from across the UK, in person and not through a screen or in a working capacity, which is very unusual these days! Luckily, the weather was great which made the walk even more enjoyable.

This event was a fantastic way of getting colleagues together in a non-work setting now that Covid restrictions have eased. We were all locked up for so long that it was amazing to see a group from all over the country come together and enjoy a day of walking and socialising- something that recently we could not have imagined being allowed to do due to restrictions. This event gave participants a chance to get to know each other and reconnect after being unable to do so for too long, and as an added bonus we were able to do it for a good cause.

Even though this was a very tiring day, it was also very rewarding and the sore legs were worth it. I look forward to having the opportunity to get involved in other events like this in the future and would encourage you to get outside with your colleagues for a good cause!

The team also made a short video of the three day walk. Click here to watch.
