RFH Brexit Update 8 March. First round of UK / EU negotiations completed and UK publishes objectives in seeking free trade agreement with the United States.

Brexit Developments

First round of UK / EU negotiations completed: The EU UKTR head Michele Barnier has issued a brief statement and video following this weeks negotiations in which he emphasises the need for no going back on commitments, mutual respect including respect for the independence of both the UK and the EU.  There remains a need to agree ground rules that will make it possible to cooperate on trade and to agree together to maintain coherent and comparable high standards over time. The Prime Ministers Office has issued a brief statement including the following ‘In some areas there seems to be a degree of common understanding of how to take the talks forward. In other areas, such as fishing, governance, criminal justice and the so-called ‘level playing field’ issues there are, as expected, significant differences. The UK team made clear that, on 1 January 2021, we would regain our legal and economic independence – and that the future relationship must reflect that fact.  The second round is due to commence in London on 18th March.
