Ambitious food reformulation targets published: Public Health England has published what are described as ‘voluntary’ food reformulation targets aimed at reducing calorie, sugar and salt content of most foods by 2024 including eating out, takeaway and delivery sectors. A monitoring report has been published on current targets and a commitment to further action if progress towards the targets is considered unsatisfactory. A report by the National Audit Office on childhood obesity has highlighted that whilst Public Health England has made some progress with encouraging industry to reduce sugar levels in certain products, the government will not meet its ambition for industry to reduce sugar by 20% in products by 2020 and the
evidence that the schemes in the programme will reduce childhood obesity rates is limited.
