Two wins for DWF at the Insurance POST Claims and Fraud Awards 2021

01 November 2021

DWF's counter-fraud capabilities were once again recognised at the recent Insurance POST Claims and Fraud  Awards. Our UK team were recognised as Fraud Intelligence Team of the Year and Analyst Joseph O'Gorman, was also awarded Young Fraud Investigator of the Year.  Find out more about the award wins.

Fraud Intelligence Team of the Year

DWF have been awarded Fraud Intelligence Team of the Year in recognition of a combined approach to COVID-19 related issues.

In 2020, DWF worked with insurers to identify those exploiting the pandemic for financial gain. The team built a COVID-19 router which identifies valid claims from fraudulent/farmed claims at source. These claims are then routed to the teams with the right skill set, along with appropriate strategies to defend the claims, so reducing indemnity spend.

The router, which was uniquely constructed by DWF, included creation of a database to host COVID-19 claims and the design of criteria for data entry, ensuring multiple claims, cross-industry claims and potential claims clusters could be detected. It enables real-time advice and risk-scoring through a multi-disciplinary approach at the onset of the claims, including analytical, intelligence and legal experts across a broad range of claims.

Lorraine Carolan, Global Head of Fraud, commented: "I am thrilled that the DWF Counter Fraud Team has once again been recognised for the innovative and sterling work it does in collaboration with our insurance clients. Constantly looking for evolving fraud / potential fraud threats is an absolute must to ensure that we have our finger on the pulse to detecting and combatting fraud at the earliest. I am very proud of the multi disciplinary talents within the team which created the COVID-19 Router and which underpins its success".

Young Fraud Investigator of the Year

Joseph O'Gorman is a Fraud and Financial Crime Insight & Intel Analyst at DWF. Whilst initially joining DWF in a non-fraud role, Joseph's passion for investigating fraud, specifically layering, became evident. Through forging a close relationship with DWF's Organised Fraud Team, developing processes of fraud identification and working with our data analytics and intelligence departments, Joseph has spearheaded many successful fraud investigations and was quickly promoted into the team.

Joseph's work has made a significant difference to clients' indemnity savings. In 2019/2020, investigations into rogue rehabilitation claims with one major UK insurer achieved £8.1 million savings across pre- and post-litigation work.

Lorraine Carolan, Global Head of Fraud commented: "I am absolutely delighted that Joseph's work has received industry recognition which is so well deserved. Joseph's collaboration with our insurance clients / the global fraud team has tremendously enhanced our fraud detection capabilities and really contributed to reducing leakage in claims for our insurance clients."

Joseph O'Gorman, Fraud and Financial Crime Insight & Intel Analyst commented: "I am incredibly grateful for all of the support and opportunities I have received from everyone at DWF and our insurance clients. I feel very privileged to get to work with such great people every day, and winning the Young Fraud Investigator award has been a real highlight of a great year."
