Prem specialises in corporate criminal defence work and contentious regulatory matters. He has a broad spectrum of experience in health and safety, inquests, environment, water regulation, regulatory compliance and food safety matters.

Experience

Prem's specialism lies in health and safety matters involving fatalities and serious injuries. He regularly advises and defends individuals and large corporates facing health and safety, gross negligence manslaughter and corporate manslaughter charges.

Prem also has extensive experience advising in respect of other regulatory matters including: contentious and non-contentious environmental issues, food hygiene prosecutions and water regulatory matters.

Prem has acted for a large oil company and a water company in relation to numerous oil and sewage pollution incidents. He regularly advises on Environment Agency investigations, providing strategic advice to clients from the outset of an incident, through to attendance at an interview under caution. He has completed multiple secondments to the legal team of a FTSE 100 water company, advising on both environmental and health and safety incidents.

In addition to defence work, Prem conducts private prosecutions. Prem advises throughout the prosecution process, from the initial decision to prosecute, through to prosecution in the Magistrates' Court.

Prem's recent experience includes:

  • Successfully representing the director of a roofing company following a fall from height on site. The director was found not guilty of gross negligence manslaughter following a lengthy trial.
  • Representing an American multinational mass media and entertainment conglomerate in relation to a sentencing hearing following a serious accident on the set of a film.
  • Successfully navigating three separate inquests for a FTSE 100 water company.
  • Acting for one of the largest operators of restaurants and pubs in the UK following the death of a man who had been restrained by police.
  • Supporting a water and sewerage undertaker in connection with a prosecution brought by the DWI following a cryptosporidium outbreak.
  • Successfully resisting two Ofwat appeals against a water company following a decision to reject and vary trade effluent licences.
