DWF supports next generation at annual Mooting competition

19 February 2019
Global legal business DWF has sponsored the annual Lord Jones Mooting Competition at the University of Dundee for the third year in a row.

Held on Saturday 9th February, the competition involved law students from across Scotland representing the Universities of Abertay, Dundee, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Strathclyde competing against each other to win a work experience placement at DWF, as well as a host of other prizes.

The competition involved a mock legal debate in front of a judge, Herbert Kerrigan QC, with competitors arguing opposing sides of a legal issue, in a realistic setting to replicate the experience of presenting a case in court. Following a close final between two teams from the University of Glasgow, the winners were Dylan Higgins and Ryan Scott, who will both undertake work placements with DWF.

The competition was launched by the University of Dundee Mooting Society in 2016 and is named after the late Lord Jones, a Dundee graduate who was instrumental in founding the competition.

Wayne Lawrence, executive partner for DWF's Edinburgh office, said: "We're very proud to support the Lord Jones Mooting Competition once again as it gives students a unique opportunity to develop their skills in a realistic setting, supported by legal professionals with years of experience.

"We're looking forward to welcoming Dylan and Ryan to our offices, where we will give them a well-rounded flavour of what life is like in a legal business during their placements with us."

Kate Scarborough, of the Dundee Mooting Society, said: “This event would not have been possible without the support of DWF, who kindly sponsored us, as well as all the judges, supporters, and the rest of the mooting committee.

“Particular thanks go to Herbert Kerrigan QC for judging three rounds in the morning as well as being our final judge. Thanks also to Fiona Jones and her son Richard for their continued support of the event.

“Sarah King also deserves a special mention and thanks for all her help with ensuring the day ran as smoothly as possible. I hope everyone enjoyed the moot and that this event will continue for years to come!”
