International trade, customs and WTO

We advise on all aspects of EU, UK and international trade and WTO law and particularly in light of the UK’s departure from the European Union, on EU/UK relations via the Trade & Cooperation Agreement 2020 and its various implementing instruments, in addition to EU law.

Why work with our International Trade team?

Our advice ranges from the EU and UK’s use of trade defence instruments such as anti-dumping and anti-subsidy, through to customs issues such as classification and rules of origin (preferential and non-preferential), through to WTO law and disputes between sovereign nations, and emerging instruments such as the EU’s Foreign Subsidies Regulation.

The DWF team has a strong track-record of practicing in the EU and UK, including a very rare combination of experience of handling all kinds of EU trade defence measures in addition to State Aid measures, Competition Law measures (cartels and mergers) and public procurement - thereby being able to blend the experience of the various different remedies available.

Particularly now and in view of our stand-out practice advising on all kinds of subsidies in the EU and UK, this is especially practical for questions relating to the EU’s new Foreign Subsidies Regulation.

Our legal services can help you

Whether you are a domestic industry suffering from rising pressure from volume and/or pricing of imports, or are worried about losing a public bid or a merger opportunity to an overseas bidder (possibly powered by subsidies in their home country), we can advise on how best to navigate the landscape of international trade and competition. We track what the risks are, alongside the opportunities – enabling us to use the systems in place to either protect or enhance your business.

Most of all, the DWF team understands the intersections between the different regimes impacting this area, namely Competition Law, merger control, public procurement, State aid and subsidies, and international trade defence mechanisms.
