Special Counsel at DWF announced as a finalist in the Lawyers Weekly Women in Law Awards 2022

04 October 2022

DWF, the global provider of integrated legal and business services, is excited to announce that Marissa Coward has been named as a finalist for Special Counsel of the Year in the Lawyers Weekly Women in Law Awards 2022.

Joining DWF in August 2021, Marissa Coward has 14 years' experience in the defence of dust disease and personal injury claims. Her unique expertise has greatly enhanced DWF's niche speciality in respiratory illness claims and dust disease litigation. Marissa is also experienced in defending catastrophic injury and medical negligence claims as well as both plaintiff and defendant insurance litigation.

Marissa plays an active leadership role at DWF and is dedicated to the mentoring of junior staff, particularly women. She regularly assists junior female staff with their career plans and goals.

Recently, Marissa was appointed as a Committee Member for the Association for Women In Insurance (Qld) Inc—a not-for-profit organisation established to enhance the position of women in the insurance and legal industry.

She is a Committee Member of DWF's Diversity & Inclusion Committee and has been responsible for driving a number of D&I initiatives at the firm which have involved raising funds for organisations such as Wesley Mission Queensland and Braille House. Marissa also played a leadership role in a staff volunteer day in partnership with Habitat for Humanity which involved working on a women's domestic violence shelter.

Commenting on the announcement, Damien van Brunschot, Managing Partner of Australia, said “On behalf of the firm I congratulation Marissa on this wonderful accomplishment. Marissa is an important part of DWF's leadership team and has made a huge impact in the past year that she has been with us. It is really pleasing to see her being nationally recognised for her outstanding work as one of the country's successful women in the legal industry. We wish Marissa all the best for the Awards Night on 24 November in Melbourne."
