Consumer Trends 2022: ESG – buzz word or business critical?

11 January 2022

ESG is not just good for business, it is good business. From #MeToo to COP 26, scrutiny is high and the consumer sector is at the heart of change and influence.

ESG is not just good for business, it is good business. This is nothing new, but since the #MeToo and Black Lives Matter movements in respect of social issues and the COP26 summit in November of last year in respect of the environment, the level of focus has increased dramatically. A business' performance is being judged by consumers, investors and the markets with a fervour that has never previously been the case. The consumer sector is at the heart of change, influence and scrutiny.

In December we released our “Making ESG an integral part of the business” report which includes insights from 480 senior executives globally about the challenges and opportunities they face, what they are doing now and intend to do in the future and where they are turning to for support to help them navigate through the regulation and legal requirements, in order to overcome issues and thrive as a business.

For the consumer sector we found that the responsibilities and ownership of ESG as an issue within the business is more fragmented than other sectors (57% for Consumer sector vs. an average of just 44% across the other sectors indicated that fragmentation was an issue), something businesses hope to see improve over the next 12 months. As businesses start to focus on creating some consistency and strategy, what are some of the key issues within the sector?
