Power & Utilities

Global demand for power continues to rise at a spectacular rate, driven by a combination of the growing world population, increased standards of living and wealth, as well as the related surge in consumption. This can make the sector difficult to navigate from a legal perspective, without the right support.

Understanding the Power & Utilities sector

The power industry is crucial to the functioning of every economy, household and individual. It is also heavily regulated: energy companies, governments and grid operators all have a myriad of issues to consider every day to ensure the entire system works properly. The industry players are also faced with a number of challenges, including capital expenditure requirements, complex technology, long construction periods, regulatory requirements and regulator involvement when bringing new power plants online.

Our power specialists regularly advise governments, corporates, funders, suppliers, traders and manufacturers in the sector. We combine years of experience in M&A, project development, finance, regulatory and environmental compliance and dispute resolution with deep industry knowledge to serve clients to a high level.

Our Power & Utilities team deliver industry knowledge and expertise

DWF also maintains a strong nuclear practice, offering a 360-degree view of the nuclear project cycle. This is driven from the experience of supporting clients in all aspects of their business, from feasibility studies for a new nuclear plant development, financing and construction, to operational issues, uranium mining, fuel fabrication, storage, trading and transportation, as well as waste disposal and decommissioning.

Our experts have a wealth of industry and sector expertise and have experience of developing, financing, commissioning and addressing operational issues associated with power plants and associated fuel and logistics issues. We can offer advice and support to developers or funders of IPP projects on a global scale; whether CCGT, conventional thermal or nuclear power generation. In particular, we have significant experience of advising developers, investors and operators in connection with the development of new nuclear build projects globally; having advised on over $200bn of investment in new nuclear power plants.

Our specialists also have unrivalled experience in the waste management and decommissioning sector. Dealing with regulatory compliance and meeting international safety and non-proliferation treaty obligations is an area of particular expertise. We are used to supporting clients to understand the regulated and de-regulated electricity markets in their operating jurisdictions. In light of the impact of electricity market reforms it is of great importance for our energy experts to be ahead of the competition in understanding key opportunities and threats in relation to our clients' businesses.

Our team includes individuals that have an extensive level of experience of working within the water sector. We act for multiple water utility companies as well as a wide variety of businesses involved in the water and waste water supply chain and related parts of the sector on a global level.
