As per the report, 29 prosecutions were commenced, including seven against individual defendants. Eight investigation briefs were withdrawn before prosecutions commenced due to a lack of reasonable prospects.
The Office of the Work Health and Safety Prosecutor (OWHSP) reported a prosecution-conviction rate of 100%, although one of the 14 finalised prosecutions was withdrawn due to an Enforceable Undertaking. Three cases are being appealed, so it is possible the conviction rate will be closer to their goal of 90%. A total of $2.2 million in fines were ordered.
The WHSP has also shown the increased turnover of prosecutorial activity, with the OWHSP reportedly meeting its goal of assessing and actioning 85% of briefs within 90 days of referral.
