Future leaders in the Built Environment

We recently co-hosted our Future Leaders in the Built Environment event with Sixteen Real Estate, bringing together experienced professionals and emerging talent for a focused discussion on the challenges and opportunities shaping the sector.

Designed to support the next generation of leaders, the session provided a valuable platform for knowledge-sharing and collaboration. The panel included Katherine Carey (Partner) and Furqan Valli (Solicitor), from DWF, Rosie Veitch (Associate Director) from Sixteen Real Estate and Benn Dickinson (Leasing Director) from Karrev. The event focused on several key themes, including transactional risks, the future of the built environment and career development. Here are some highlights from the discussion.

Navigating transactional risks

The panel explored how transactional risks are evolving and what that means for both experienced professionals and those entering the industry. Discussions highlighted how deal-making today is more complex and fast-paced than ever before. Panellists reflected on the shift from more traditional processes to increasingly sophisticated deal structures, shaped by commercial pressures, client demands and the need for greater collaboration between real estate professionals in transactions. The discussion emphasised the importance of adaptability, commercial awareness, relationship building and the ability to navigate uncertainty as key skills for emerging professionals.

The future of the Built Environment

The second discussion focused on the forces shaping the built environment over the next decade and the role the next generation will play in driving change. Panellists identified a range of transformative influences including technological advancement and shifting occupier demands. The panellists shared insights on the need for resilience and innovative thinking, encouraging future leaders to embrace change, stay flexible and utilise technology to enhance efficiency and unlock new opportunities in how the industry designs, delivers and manages the built environment.

Career development in a fast-changing sector

The final discussion focused on career development, offering reflections on building a successful career in the built environment. Panellists reflected on what they wish they had understood earlier in their careers — particularly the importance of building credibility, developing relationships and seeking exposure to different experiences from the outset. They encouraged emerging professionals to take these lessons forward as they establish themselves in a competitive and fast‑moving industry. 

A common theme throughout was the importance of continuous development. In an industry defined by change, investing in skills, networking and personal growth is essential to long-term success.
