DWF real estate partner Naveen Gupta said: "Much has been made of increasing taxes on online retailers and lowering business rates, but these aren’t the only ways to save the high street. High street retailers must recognise that there has been a fundamental shift in the way people shop. Successful retailers are those providing a “phygital” offering, in which the store becomes a destination, pulling shoppers in by incorporating technology with bespoke experiences. However, if retailers are to make such innovative changes, local authorities must become more flexible in planning and collaborate closely with property owners and occupiers, as the type of stores that can regenerate the high street may not sit squarely under Class A1 (shops and retail outlets) use."
