James Griffiths

Director, DWF in Belfast

James acts for businesses, insurers and public authorities in relation to a broad span of commercial disputes and regulatory matters, with particular experience in relation to contentious intellectual property and media law matters, construction disputes, contract and shareholder disputes, liquor licensing, and professional negligence actions.

Experience

Having trained in a City law firm, James has practised in Northern Ireland since 2010. He advises clients on a wide range of commercial issues. He has considerable experience of litigating and resolving commercial disputes, including construction disputes (including litigation, arbitration, adjudication and early neutral evaluation), and contract and shareholder disputes. He regularly advises insurers and their insureds involved in professional negligence actions (for insured solicitors, accountants, insurance brokers, financial advisors, engineers, and architects).

He has also substantial experience of acting in claims involving employers' liability, public liability, D&O cover, property disputes and general insurance (recoveries and liability) matters. James also specialises in technology, intellectual property and media law disputes, and regularly advises clients in relation to matters involving copyright, trade marks and passing off, design rights, patents and matters involving trade secrets/breach of confidence. James' media law practice focuses upon defamation, privacy, information law and data protection issues, including the management of reputational risk to individuals and businesses, and the challenges posed by social media.

Over the years James has also amassed significant experience with regard to property disputes and judicial review. He also regularly advises clients in respect of liquor licensing matters, and in relation to betting, gaming and prize competitions in Northern Ireland. James has considerable experience of mediation in the context of commercial litigation, and is a keen proponent of its use, where appropriate, as a means of resolving disputes cost-effectively and creatively. James invariably focuses upon delivering to clients the most efficient and beneficial outcomes possible within the parameters of their particular legal and factual situation.
