Climate Action

Plant farm

The environment has become a critical business challenge. We recognise our role in supporting the global transition to a sustainable low carbon economy, and aim to lead by example in our own operations.

Our approach

We focus on actual reductions in our emissions by cutting energy use, transitioning to renewables, significantly reducing the frequency and carbon intensity of commuting and business travel and investing in solutions that remove carbon from the atmosphere. Every one of our colleagues will need to play a part in reducing both the frequency and the carbon intensity of their commuting and business travel as we evolve new ways of working.

Our commitments

Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) methodology

We have verified science-based targets with the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). Therefore, we have aggressive science-based targets for carbon reduction in line with a 1.5C pathway that address our Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions to reduce by 50% across all three by 2030.

Our overall SBTi target was calculated by following its methodology outlined in the target setting tool. We have calculated the reductions necessary from a 2019 base year through to 2030 and utilised this data to then create our own internal metrics/plans to reduce our emissions. These will be reported on at least bi-annually, unless analysis shows a material deviation from our planned target, at which point this will be reported as described above and remedial actions put in place if the deviation is within our control.

Climate-Related Scenario Planning

We align to the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosure (TCFD) to inform business decisions and strategy, and through investment in carbon removal projects and achieve net zero in our global operations by 2030.

Waste

We aim to send zero waste to landfill, a net positive water impact and 100% resource recovery, with all materials and products recovered, recycled or reused at their end of use.

Energy

We do not own any of the buildings we occupy but are continuing to encourage the procurement of Renewable Green Energy across 100% of our sites, as well as exploring the feasibility of introducing water conservation methods. This will extend to any future property expansion whether that be an office move or office space acquired during M&A activity to assist with our Scope 1 and 2 Targets. Future office space will also take into consideration the EPC as well as BREEAM rating.

Engagement

During 2021, we rolled out the Carbon Literacy Project (‘CLP’) training for our colleagues. In order for us to do this, we have to create a course and have this verified by the CLP. So far, training has taken place with approximately 25 people – all achieving certification. A schedule of training has been put in place for FY2022/23 with the aim of training at least a further 60 people across the business. We are pleased to report that we have achieved Bronze Standard from the CLP.

Collaboration with our Supply Chain

We are working with our supply chain to develop ways to reduce environmental impacts. Reviewing the environmental credentials of suppliers as part of the on-boarding process and then throughout the tem of the contract, we undertake audits and review the provisions in place such as minimising delivery packaging and optimising recovery, and ensuring where possible that products purchased with a recognised certification (e.g. MSC and FSC certified).

Environmental Management

Our Environmental Management System ("EMS") is based on the International Standard EN ISO 14001:2015 requirement.  By working to this standard, it ensures that we manage our environmental impacts efficiently and thoroughly comply with relevant environmental legislation and regulations, and minimise our environmental impacts wherever possible.

    Our climate action priorities

    • Continue Certification to ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Standard) for our offices in England & Scotland.
    • Expand the scope of offices certified to include Belfast in FY 22/23
    • Identify at least one decarbonisation project during FY 22/23, to achieve additional emission reductions/removal from the atmosphere beyond our science-based targets
    • Commit to further training throughout FY22/23 with the aim to have at least a further 50 people certified as Carbon Literate.
    • Strengthen our approach and collaboration as a member of the Legal Sustainability Alliance
